Pokemon Go: Newest Sports Taunt Goes Global

As we all expected, Pokémon Go has quickly made its way into the sports world.

Over the weekend, Rovaniemen Palloseura — a soccer club that plays in Finland’s Premier Division — beat FC Lahti by a final score of 2-1 to give themselves an ever-so-slight lead in the season standings. It helps that they got off to a quick start by scoring a goal in the opening two minutes of the match, which they celebrated by grouping together in the middle of the field and pretending to be on the hunt for Pokémon on their imaginary phones.

There’s plenty more where that came from, too. MMA fighter Michael “Venom” Page put on a hat and rolled a Pokeball toward Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos (who is now in the hospital with a terrifying skull fracture) after knocking him out at Bellator 158. NBA players vacationing in Las Vegas were trying to catch them all in the middle of Summer League games, while Pokémons were basically the star of the show at yet another disappointing MLB All-Star Game.

An MLS team even announced their new signings with a Pokémon-inspired video on Twitter that went viral to the tune of over 1,000 retweets! So yeah, if you had any hopes or dreams of seeing Pokémon Go fade away anytime soon, you can probably kiss those goodbye.
