After defeating Holly Holm at UFC 196 to become the women’s bantamweight champion of the world, Miesha Tate will defend her title at UFC 200 on July 9th against Amanda Nunes. It’s not necessarily the matchup people were initially expecting for Tate (many thought she’d fight Holm again or wait for Rousey to return), but the UFC believes Nunes is “the next best girl in line.” (It also helps that Nunes isn’t afraid to talk trash since she recently said she has all the tools to beat Miesha because she “has a lot of holes in her game.”)
Anyways, while talking to Conan O’Brien earlier this week, Tate was asked about the rumors that a fight with Rousey might be on the cards soon. At first, she avoided any landmines by saying her focus now is entirely on Nunes, not a potential third fight with Rousey.
“Right now, I’m trying to really stay focused on Amanda,” Tate said on Conan. “I know everyone is so excited for that Rousey fight. I hope that is something. But I don’t want to overlook Amanda because if I don’t beat Amanda, there’s no next.”
Then, Tate began throwing shade at Rousey for taking an extended break following her shocking loss to Holm when Conan brought it up again.
“I’m not saying she won’t come back,” said Tate. “I just don’t know if she’ll come back the same because she seems awfully pouty about the loss. We’ve all had losses, you know? You either get up and get back on the horse and come back stronger for it, or you sit out for over a year.”
I guess we’ll find out soon if this is falling on deaf ears or not.
