It’s been less than a month since Holly Holm shook up the UFC landscape with the kick felt ’round the world, and from the moment she KO’ed Ronda Rousey and took the Bantamweight belt, her victory has been described as an upset for the ages.
According to the oddsmakers, that was true – but the fighter known as “The Preacher’s Daughter” would beg to differ. She went into her UFC 193 bout ready to shock the world, thanks to her rather non-traditional training regimen, which she revealed exclusively to Rolling Stone. Seems Ronda Rousey has nothing on Von Kaiser.
“He was a real bruiser but I was able to get some good shots in on him,” Holm says of her sparring partner – who also cameos in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out. “It’s been a long road and it sure hasn’t been easy.”
After dispatching of “The German Steel Machine,” Holm moved up in the ranks to challenge Street Fighter II‘s Brazilian beast, Blanka, and though his electric attacks were daunting, she handled business once again – this time with a couple of well-placed kicks (wonder where she got the strategy for the Rousey fight?). But she didn’t stop there…up next was Mortal Kombat‘s ice-cold assassin, Sub Zero.
“We had an epic battle, but in the end, I was able to finish him,” Holm says.
That triumph also marked the only time to date she’s actually decapitated an opponent. And let’s just say it wasn’t the only thing that had her ready to face Ronda.
“Also,” she says, “I’m undefeated in Pong.”
