Watch any MLB, NFL, WWE, UFC or any other sporting event and there’s a pretty great chance that you’re going to see some kind of homemade sign dedicated to Harambe, the gorilla that was killed this past May at the Cincinnati Zoo after a child fell into the the primate’s enclosure. Go on the internet, and there’s also a pretty good chance you’ll see somebody tweet or email something about the dead gorilla. Harambe is the meme that just won’t go away.
But for some reason or another, the customizable Harambe football jersey that fans could make in the NFL Store did disappear for a little while. But according to a spokesperson at Fanatic who talked to Sara Germano of the Wall Street Journal, who works with the NFL on its online sales, “The NFL never asked for this name to be banned.”
The mystery, it seems, has been solved.
“It turns out an employee, in an effort to be vigilant and keep the banned list as current as possible, took it upon themselves to ban the word across our sites. Once we realized the error, we fixed the issue and Harambe is now available again,” the spokesperson said.
Looks like there’s a little justice for Harambe after all.
