Happy Cinco de Mayo, Here’s Charles Barkley Butchering Basic Spanish
TNT’s Inside the NBA crew is off until Sunday, which is probably a good thing, considering the night Charles Barkley just had.
When he wasn’t advocating for the Atlanta Hawks to “take out” a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers – as a means of retaliation for LeBron and Co. gleefully hosting 3-pointers (they made an NBA-record 25 of them) during a Game 2 rout of the Birds – or extending his 20-year feud with Charles Oakley, who questioned Chuckster’s toughness on Twitter, he was absolutely butchering the Spanish language live on air.
See, since Barkley, EJ, Kenny and Shaq would be off our airwaves for a few days, that meant they’d miss Cinco de Mayo, America’s second favorite day of cultural appropriation and public intoxication. So they decided to take Charles to task for claiming – five years ago – that he was planning on learning Spanish, by giving him a little quiz.
After a few explanations of the rules, Barkley eventually caught on, and actually aced the vocabulary section (and, by that, we mean he knew what a “churro” was.) But when it came to translating some key phrases, he failed mightily – “Me voy” does not mean “My dog,” Chuck.
And as the phrases became increasingly difficult, Barkley basically tapped out…though at least now he knows how to say “Sir, can you please put your towel on?” en Espanol. And while the Inside crew couldn’t keep from cracking up, perhaps we should cut him a little slack. After all, we’re pretty sure Charles has never uttered the phrase “No more, I’m on a diet” in any language.
