Former WWE champion known as Alberto Del Rio, currently wrestling on the independent circuit as Alberto el Patrón, did not appear for his Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) match this past Sunday. One of Mexico’s most popular wrestlers, the no-show was a surprise, although there had been speculation and rumors that the wrestler was in Orlando, to make his debut for TNA’s Bound for Glory event.

According to a post on his Instagram (warning: graphic images), El Patron’s reasons for missing the match were much more serious: he was the victim of a stabbing attack.

The former WWE superstar posted a statement across all of his social media accounts documenting what happened:

“Mr. Rodriguez (“Alberto El Patron”) shortly after eating a meal before his flight was assaulted by a criminal with a knife outside the restaurant. Mr. Rodriguez suffered multiple lacerations on his arm and other parts of his body defending against the criminal as Police were called by witnesses. Mr. Rodriguez received medical attention and went back to the Police Department and was unable to make his flight. Mr. Rodriguez has spoken with the ownership of Lucha Libre AAA World Wide and given them documentation of the incident. Mr. Rodriguez greatly regrets not being there yesterday for his fans in Mexico and promises to everyone he will make this up as soon as possible. Despite the graphic lacerations Mr. Rodriguez will not miss any of his shows for the remainder of the year and is ready to compete this weekend in the UK.”

El Patron was released by the WWE last month. He has wrestled all over the world, held numerous championships, is widely considered one of Mexico’s best wrestlers and one of the biggest free agent names on the market. He’s expected to make a full recovery from the multiple lacerations suffered.
