Floyd Mayweather Goes Kanye West on His Critics

Why didn’t Money choose Gennady Golovkin as his final opponent? Because you people are never happy

All this talk about Gennady Golovkin is really starting to piss off Floyd Mayweather.

Before taking the easy way out by fighting Andre Berto in his grand finale, many were hoping to see Mayweather take on Golovkin, the rare fighter with the punching power (and spirit) to test Money’s defensive fortitude. Mayweather’s reasoning for skipping Triple G was rather simple – he didn’t want to move up to 160 pounds or meet him in the middle – but also somewhat flawed, since he weighed in at just over 150 pounds for a bout against Saul Alvarez in 2013.

Anyway, the fight never happened, and now that that Mayweather’s enjoying the retired life, he says it wouldn’t have mattered if Golovkin was his final opponent, and not just because he would he have made “easy work” out of him (sure, dude). It seems that Money’s critics – and there are a lot of them – are never satisfied, and not even retiring at 49-0 was enough to make them shut up. So he simply got tired of trying.

“Once I fought and beat everybody, first it was, ‘Mayweather was scared of this guy!’ What I do? I beat him! ‘Mayweather’s scared of that guy!’ I beat him!” Mayweather told Fight Hype. “It’s getting to a point that, if me and Triple G would have fought when I was fighting, I would’ve beat him and then guess what? There’s going to be an excuse. Now it’s time for me to go to 168 [pounds].”

And because he’s Floyd Mayweather, he also took the opportunity to remind us all that he’s swimming in pools of cash – “At the end of the day, every month, I get a seven-figure check and I’m very comfortable and I’m happy with that,” he said. So long as you’re happy, Money.
