Conor McGregor to Fight Eddie Alvarez for Lightweight Title at UFC 205

The wait is over to find out who will be headlining UFC’s first ever New York City event at Madison Square Garden on November 12th at UFC 205. And maybe not too surprisingly, one of the biggest fighters in the world, Conor McGregor, is involved. But this isn’t just any old fight. We could be talking history here. 

McGregor will square of against Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title, giving the Notorious an opportunity to hold two titles at the same time. While other fighters have captured titles in different weight classes, McGregor, coming off his epic rematch victory against Nate Diaz at UFC 202, could become the first to ever hold two at once. 

McGregor, the featherweight champ who was up to 168-pounds for his last fight, will have to shed some of that weight to hit the limit of 155-pounds to fight for the title that’s one weight class above the one he already holds 

The 32-year-old Alvarez will prove tough competition. He’s been campaigning for the fight, knowing McGregor was at just the right size for the two to meet. McGregor was initially supposed to go after the lightweight title in March at UFC 196 against then-champion Rafael dos Anjos, but the match fell through. He stayed on the card and fought Diaz, who handed him his first UFC loss. 

The card will be UFC’s first ever in New York City after MMA was banned by the state in 1997. It will also include defending welterweight champion Tyron Woodley against Stephen Thompson, and female strawweight titleholder Joanna Jedrzejczyk fighting Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
