We can’t say we didn’t see the San Francisco 49ers’ fall coming; from replacing fiery head coach Jim Harbaugh with former car-dweller Jim Tomsula to an offseason marked with surprise retirements of several star players, all the signs were there. But no one could have expected it would get this bad this quickly.
The 49ers are off to a dismal 2-6 start this season and the offense ranks last in total points and total yards. Naturally, much of the criticism has fallen on the shoulders of former wunderkind Colin Kaepernick, who isn’t on the best of terms with his teammates and has seen his efficiency freefall since his starry debut in 2012. Just ask wide receiver Torrey Smith.
It’s gotten so bad that Niners fans tried to put Kaepernick up for sale on Amazon following the team’s 27-6 loss to St. Louis on Sunday.
And in the days since, the 49ers appear to have given up any hope of salvaging the season, trading tight end Vernon Davis to Denver and benching Kaepernick in favor of Blaine Gabbert. And considering Gabbert –a former first-round pick who flamed out in Jacksonville – sports a career 5-22 record and has thrown more interceptions than touchdown passes, well, it’s pretty safe to say both the team and its former franchise QB have hit rock bottom.
Hey, at least folks in the Bay Area still have Steph Curry to root for.
