Bubba Watson Goes Shooter McGavin at the U.S. Open

You knew it was only a matter of time until playing on the world’s most frustrating golf course got to Bubba Watson.
While Watson finished his first round of the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay with an even-par 70 – tied for his second-best round ever at the tournament – he didn’t get off to the best of starts. He began his day by double bogeying the first hole, did the same thing on the tenth, flubbed a bunker shot and had to spend the day playing a course that looked like Mad Max’s backyard.
To add to his frustrations, it took over five hours to complete his round. By the time he worked his way to the Par 5 18th, he probably had to pee or something, which is why he decided “Fuck it, I’m going for the green.” He didn’t hit a terrible shot by any stretch, but by that point, he was done being patient, and just kind of morphed into Shooter McGavin.
“Waiting 30 minutes,” Watson exclaimed, swinging his club wildly. “This is pathetic professional golf!”
Watson has since explained that his “pathetic” comment was directed toward himself, not the course or the pace of play at the Open. But for someone who has been known to throw a tantrum or two when things aren’t going his way, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was just doing some damage control. He did blow off the media following his round, after all.
Watson can sleep well knowing that it could always be much worse, however, a lesson Tiger Woods is kindly teaching everyone as he aims to bounce back from the worst U.S. Open round of his career.
But, hey, at least he can laugh about it thanks to Rickie Fowler.
