Longtime Pink House defender Derenda Hancock watched anti-abortion demonstrators outside the Jackson Women’s Health Organization clinic in Jackson, Mississippi, the only facility in the state that performs abortions.
U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York joined abortion-rights demonstrators in Washington. “People will die because of this decision,” she said on Twitter after the decision was released. “We will never stop until abortion rights are restored in the United States of America.”
Protesters in Paris held a banner that read, “Abortion is sacred.” By overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court gives each state the power to decide its own abortion laws. This will create a patchwork of uneven abortion access across the country, dependent on the politics of state elected officials.
Before Friday’s decision, constitutional protections for abortion had been in place for nearly 50 years.
Representative Maxine Waters from California addressed the press outside the Supreme Court. “Women are going to control their bodies no matter how they try and stop us,” she said. “To Hell with the Supreme Court. We will defy them.”
Activists in Washington, D.C. drew on the sidewalk following the Supreme Court’s decision. Before joining the majority side of Friday’s decision, all but one – Clarence Thomas – of the conservative justices testified during their confirmation hearings that they believed abortion access was “settled law.”

A group of House Democrats spoke in front of the Supreme Court following Friday’s decision. According to an estimate by Planned Parenthood, 36 million people — or roughly half of women who are of reproductive age in America — live in states that will be affected by the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision.
With the reversal of Roe, other fundamental rights are now in the GOP’s crosshairs. In his concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the court should next reconsider protections on contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.
