Protests Spread After Killing George Floyd: Pictures

Thousands of peaceful protestors first gathered on May 26th to march from the site of Floyd’s death to the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct. On Thursday night, for the third night in a row, protestors marched through downtown Minneapolis, demanding justice and an end to police violence. “Say his name. George Floyd,” protesters chanted. “I can’t breathe.” The video shared on social media shows protesters stopping their march at one point, kneeling and raising a fist in a moment of silence. “These officers, they need to be arrested right now, the people want justice right now,” Philonese Floyd, George’s brother, told CNN on Thursday morning. “They need to be convicted and get the death penalty.”
Sign of Solidarity

On May 28th, demonstrators joined hands in St. Paul, Minnesota, wearing masks due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called in the U.S. National Guard and declared a state of emergency for the Twin Cities area, which includes Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The city of Minneapolis also declared a 72-hour local emergency.
Precinct On Fire

As the night went on, protesters set the police precinct on fire by crowding around and climbing up the building to light its exterior. “The precinct is on fire. We don’t know where the police are,” said CNN National Correspondent Sara Sidner. “The fire alarm is going on inside…. People are cheering and more fireworks are going off as the police precinct is burning.”
‘No Racist Police!’

London Slaughter was one of the near 1,000 protesters that walked from the State Capitol Building in Denver, Colorado, down the 16th Street pedestrian mall. According to an event page on Facebook, a rally and march also are planned for 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Boulder, with people meeting at the bandshell in Central Park and then marching to North Boulder Park.
Signal of Distress

Aubrey Rose, a staff sergeant who has served four tours of duty in the U.S. Army, carried an upside down flag during the Denver protest. Displaying a U.S. flag upside down acts as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life. According to the Denver Post, someone fired shots toward the Capitol Building early in the evening, though nobody was injured. The building itself was vandalized, as were vehicles parked outside.

Protesters block the streets outside the Justice Center in Portland, Oregon, on May 28th, in response to the killing of Floyd. According to the Oregonian, two protests occurred in downtown Portland in front of the Multnomah County Justice Center, which houses the downtown jail, and the Portland police headquarters. The first drew a small crowd, and the second, loosely organized event attracted dozens of people. Many held signs in solidarity with Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.

In downtown Los Angeles, protesters gather on the 101 freeway. In response to the video of officers kneeling on Floyd’s neck, the Los Angeles Police Protective League’s Board of Directors said in a statement, “What we saw in that video was inconsistent and contrary to everything we have been taught, not just as an academy recruit or a police officer, but as human beings. Reverence for life in every incident a police officer encounters must be the floor and not the ceiling.”

I have said many times that racism exists across the country, state and right here in Columbus.
