Thousands of peaceful protesters gathered at Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza on June 4th for a memorial service to honor George Floyd, the man whose killing by Minneapolis police has set off protests around the country. One attendee’s tattoo carried a message about the meaning of power.
“It’s a chance to make actual change that’s been necessary since the original revolution,” said one a protester.

“This means a lot to me, because I have two black sons,” one protester said. “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of protesting, and nothing is being done. I hope that this is the last protest [and] we get justice, because once there’s no justice, there’s no peace.”

George Floyd’s younger brother, Terrence, addresses the crowd and urges for peaceful protests. “I don’t have too much to say, I think I said it all in Minnesota,” he said. “But I’m just going to say this: I’m proud of the protests, but I’m not proud of the destruction. I’m going to say that again: I’m proud of the protests, but I’m not proud of the destruction. My brother wasn’t about that.”
“Power to the people,” Terrence Floyd said. “Did you hear me? I said power to THE people. Not just my people, not just your people, not just the people they think is important, I’m talking about power to THE people. All of us!”
New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams speaks on stage. “If you’re in a protest and you want to know what to do because you’re confused and you want your voice to be heard, follow black women,” he said. “They will lead you right.”
“I’m an African-American that’s lived here my whole life,” one protester said. “It’s very strong to see people of so many different backgrounds and colors being here to represent such a strong force.”
