Highlighting online video’s unstoppable advance, YouTube has soared past three billion views per day. Now six years old, the famed Internet video sharing site, a favorite with music video directors, bands, narcissists and self-broadcasting fans alike, has seen traffic grow by more than half since last year.
More than 48 hours of video are uploaded to the service every minute, a 37% increase over the 35 hours of video per minute reported in November 2010. It’s also a 100% boost over 2009, when users shared 24 hours of video each minute. Video views are further occurring on upwards of 350 million devices including smartphones, computers and tablet PCs. Impressively, the billions of video views the website now racks up translate to almost half of the world’s population watching a YouTube video every day, or every US resident watching nine videos a day.
Originally a platform for user-generated content, YouTube has made growing inroads onto TV sets via apps and streaming media hardware, and become a vital tool for broadcasting in emerging or politically unstable nations. As digital distribution, video-on-demand and live streaming continue to grow in prominence, the site’s advance shows no signs of stopping, much to artists’ like Rebecca Black’s pleasure, and cable and television broadcasters’ chagrin.
