On Tuesday, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson got into character as Derek Zoolander and Hansel at the Maison Valentino show for Paris Fashion Week, announcing the sequel to their 2001 cult-classic comedy, Zoolander. Now, in a new video, fans can watch the dimwitted duo prepare backstage for their runway walk with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
“I’m gonna keep it simple today,” Zoolander says in the clip. “Usually I go right, left, right, left, right, left – but today, I’m going to start left in honor of how the sun rotates.” Hansel notes his confident strut was inspired by the world’s “number one problem,” the environment. “How do we reduce our footprint?” he asks. “Less walking. So today, I’m going to hover, literally. And if that doesn’t work, I’m going to do an organic, farm-to-table walk.”
On Tuesday, Paramount Pictures tweeted the sequel’s official release date as February 12th, 2016. Stiller also confirmed the news via Instagram, posting a photo of himself and Wilson with the caption, “Apparently Derek and Hansel have come to terms on #Zoolander 2.”
Tentative Zoolander 2 news has been circulating since last November, when Deadline reported that Penelope Cruz had signed on to the cast. The publication also cited rumors of Ferrell reprising his role as the evil, white-haired fashion mogul Mugatu. While it’s unclear if Stiller will once again direct, the script was reportedly penned by Justin Theroux.
Little is known about the sequel’s plot – including the status of the Derek Zoolander School for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Want to Do Other Stuff Good Too. But in a 2010 interview with MTV, Stiller said the project would likely focus on Derek and Hansel attempting to revive their modeling careers after a lengthy absence. “In the fashion world, if you go away for a year, it’s changed — it just happens so quickly,” he said. “I think the idea in the beginning of the movie is that it’s 10 years later, and Derek and Hansel are literally forgotten. Nobody remembers who they are, so they have to reinvent themselves.”
