‘The Voice’ Recap: Sisters Rule Girls Night
There’s no way either of the Thompson sisters have lain in bed wide-eyed with visions of singing a 1940s war jingle in gingham bubble dresses on TV. There’s just no way. But that’s what they found themselves doing last night, after Cee Lo insisted they sing the the Andrews Sisters’ tricky “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” as their creepy, transporting live debut. This was the greatest version of inventiveness – a surreal play on the girls’ innocence that seemed completely correct somehow, as if Tori and Taylor had actually stayed up at night giddy to sing that particular song, the one they listen to ’round the radio set every night with Maw and Paw, on their old pig farm. The rest of Cee Lo’s team performed like pros – Vicci Martinez with sparkly eyeshadow and a smoky intensity on Dolly Parton‘s “Jolene,” Nakia near-perfectly with the Kings of Leon‘s “Sex on Fire,” and Curtis Grimes Marlboro-manishly on Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” – but Tori and Taylor were so eerily effective, they might not be relatable enough to get any votes.
‘The Voice’ Power Ranking: Cee Lo Pulls Ahead With Sister Act
In Adam’s corner too, a girl stood out – Casey Weston, who fits Cee Lo’s standard of “not sounding the way you look” better than anyone else. Casey sang KT Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” with more dimensions in her voice than anyone else so far. Devon Barley had flair on OneRepublic’s “Stop and Stare,” but he was often off-key. Javier Colon took on Sarah MacLachlan’s sad cats and dogs song (“Angel”) to unanimous praise. Kudos to him, and yet…is he not a little too smooth? To appropriate the Cee Lo line again, the guy looks exactly the way he sounds.
Meanwhile, Jeff Jenkins made up for an awesomely awkward joke about crushing on “the illegal Thompson sister” by dedicating Carrie Underwood‘s “Jesus Take The Wheel” to his late mother. Christina thought this meant Jeff’s mom sang that song to him, which led to a brief lesson on metaphor. “It just reminds me of that dark time in my life…asking Jesus to take the wheel,” Jeff explained to her. Did Christina by any chance think she was an actual genie back in high school? But where was the bottle??

As for the eliminations, Bev McClellan won the country vote and Frenchie took Christina’s, leaving Raquel and Lily to pack it up for Christina’s team in the least surprising turn ever. Blake’s team scored another all-women victory, with Dia taking the nation’s vote (also unsurprising) and little Xenia taking Blake’s. This was a great call on Blake’s part, and furthermore, it meant we got to see him towering over Xenia onstage. Dia plus Xenia plus their enormous mentor Blake – there is literally nothing cuter in the world. Except the Thompson sisters. On their pig farm. In the 1940s.
