Designer Eddie Borgo is a dark horse of American jewelry, the kind that rock stars go to for their latest edgy bauble fix. It’s only fitting that one of the queens of modern rock, Kills frontwoman Alison Mosshart, has become his latest campaign muse.
Borgo’s Fall 2012 ad series is Mosshart’s first solo modeling endeavor, and she carries the brand’s stance on “hard beauty” with effortless grace. (She previously appeared with bandmate Jamie Hince in a Zadig and Voltaire campaign.) Shot by Paul Maffi, the Borgo pictures showcase the pink-haired singer flaunting the designer’s industrial gold cuffs while clad in a series of outfits that enhance her tough glamour, including a biker jacket and an epaulette-adorned military blazer. The union feels elegant and natural.
There’s a mutual admiration between Mosshart and Borgo, it seems. “Alison could not be a better representation of rock music today,” Borgo explains in a statement. “She embodies the grandeur of any true rock & roller throughout history – she is so authentic and talented – but is simultaneously restrained, cool and modest.” He goes on to note that his fall collection is inspired by New York’s mechanical inner workings – its passageways, hidden nooks and secrets.
Borgo says he considers Mosshart (who lives in London but frequents New York) to be a unique originator among the people who dwell in the city. In fact, the Kills capture urban life well; they dedicated their Midnight Boom anthem “What New York Used to Be” to the spectres of Manhattan’s creative past.
