Starting July 1st, the Wimbledon tennis championships finals will be filmed and broadcast live in high-definition 3D to movie theaters throughout the world.

Though unlikely to inspire as much techno-lust as football’s jump to HD, plans are nonetheless underway to drag the Men’s Singles Semi-Finals, Men’s Singles Finals and Women’s Finals grunting and backhanding into three dimensions. Local screenings come courtesy of Sony and SuperVision Media, who undoubtedly hope to someday bring the sport’s hushed awes and sudden squawks of exertion home.

Whether 3D tennis has what it takes to draw eyeballs to Centre Court, let alone attract millions of viewers whose interest in volley-driven athletics begins and ends at iPhone games of Pong remains uncertain. Still, cheaper than a ticket to the actual event, cooler than watching at home, tuning in has at least one other upside as well. Dollars to doughnuts, chances are you won’t be the only jackass embarrassing yourself by making noise in the middle of matches… popcorn, anyone?
