This weekend’s MTV Europe Music Awards certainly carried moments of déjà vu, as many of the wonky styles displayed on the “pink carpet” were similar to those we witnessed only two months ago at the equally splashy Video Music Awards. As you might guess, the usual suspects were once again responsible for the more memorable looks:

Lady Gaga showed up to the EMAs as many fashion insiders hoped she would, in two fully custom Paco Rabanne looks. Spring 2012’s reboot of the iconic technophilic Rabanne label seemed destined to lure in the singer, with experts predicting it would be her next go-to fashion resource. “Every outfit was made entirely of paper. It was inspired by the idea of the paper moon because there was a moon on stage tonight,” Gaga explained to Irish radio stiation Capital FM after the show. Her first pink carpet look represented a new coat of armor, a bodysuit shielded entirely by small silver scales. Inside, where Gaga performed “Marry The Night” and collected four awards, she donned another ambitious Rabanne number: a giant metallic disc that resembled an industrial art installation (pictured at left), something almost shaped like a conch shell. Though it looked indestructible, it too was made entirely of paper. With blue lipstick and a sideswept up do, she looked every bit Rabanne’s ideal new space gamine.

Katy Perry also dipped into the idea of eccentric retro glamor, but took a reliably confectionary route. She graced (and matched) the pink carpet with designer Jeremy Scott and wore a pastel pink cocktail dress from his Spring 2012 collection (pictured at left), which was inspired by a Mattel version of cowboy culture. Maintaining her pink hairdo, Perry committed fully to her ongoing signature frothy 1950s theme, even donning pink and white saddle shoes.

British singer Jessie J – who last fascinated style spectators when she showed up to sing at the VMAs in a sci-fi mini dress and crutches – was fully mobile once more and proved her resilience by making no less than three costume changes. Her wild light blue kimono opened a few eyes, but her yellow and black leopard print Dolce and Gabbana gown made the most convincing bold statement.

Hostess and former Disney sensation Selena Gomez kept her ensemble classy and conventional but still stood out from the crowd. Justin Bieber’s girl turned heads in a stunning and short (but sweet) Marchesa feathered minidress (pictured at left). We’ve enjoyed her style evolution over the past year or so – like fellow young starlet Victoria Justice, she seems to be drawn to elegance over eccentricity, and somehow that feels modern than dressing up like Sputnik for the hell of it.

U.K. singer Katy B, another advocate of minimalism, as Rolling Stone learned in September, kept it simple and classy in a black suit with plunging neckline, which contrasted nicely with her red curls and pale skin.
