Steven Tyler on ‘American Idol’ Rumor: “I’m Doing It”

Aerosmith frontman would finish Cocked, Locked, Ready to Rock Tour

American Idol fans were expecting a big announcement at the Television Critics Association press tour today in Los Angeles — the names of the show’s new judges — but Fox didn’t reveal its new additions just yet. However, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, who is rumored to be joining the show’s judges panel alongside Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez, continues to drop hints about his involvement on Idol. At a red carpet event this weekend in Las Vegas, TMZ asked Tyler about his Idol prospects. “I’m probably going to be a judge on American Idol. I’m doing it. What do you think? I’m doing it,” Tyler said at the MGM Grand Studio 54 event.

Despite the Idol rumors — Tyler reportedly hasn’t signed the contract just yet — an Aerosmith rep confirmed to TMZ that no matter what, Tyler would stick with Aerosmith through the remainder of the U.S. leg of the Cocked, Locked, Ready to Rock Tour, even though it overlaps with Idol‘s audition period. More good news for concerned Aerosmith fans: Tyler said the band will work on a new album after the tour ends.

On this morning’s syndicated Kid Kraddick in the Morning radio show, Tyler once again addressed rumors about his new primetime gig, revealing that a contract was on the table, Billboard reports. “This beautiful girl from Fox came up to me and made an offer. I honored her offer… and it’s just a work in progress,” said Tyler. “They mentioned it and I listened, and we’re on tour, so I gotta give it some time.” Tyler also talked about what his experience would add to the show. “I would be honest to the ones that think they have it, and I would be truthful in the sense that if, to those that have it, they don’t have it yet enough. And I would tell them exactly why, as I see it,” Tyler told Kraddick.

As Rolling Stone reported last week, Ellen DeGeneres announced she was leaving Idol after only one season, admitting that the show wasn’t the “right fit” for her. Simon Cowell also previously revealed he was leaving after nine seasons to launch The X Factor in America. At the TCA session, Fox entertainment chairman Peter Rice wouldn’t confirm rumors of Nigel Lythgoe being hired as executive producer, Kara DioGuardi’s firing, Randy Jackson’s return or whether Tyler or Lopez would join the show, The Hollywood Reporter writes. “The only thing I can tell you is that no one has singed a deal yet on either side of the camera to be on American Idol who wasn’t on the show last year,” Rice said. “Much of the information [in the media] is accurate and some of it is wildly inaccurate.”
