Stella McCartney Hosts Video Launch Party for Her Father

British designer Stella McCartney has certainly had her hands full lately. Aside from her usual Paris Fashion Week duties, she held a special collection viewing for London Fashion Week, and she’s even designed Team Great Britain’s Olympic uniforms. She also was in charge of helping curate ideas for her father’s new video, “My Valentine,” which Rolling Stone premiered last week. Directed by the elder McCartney and assisted by Wally Pfister, the simple but evocative black-and-white clip is available in three versions – one featuring Johnny Depp, one featuring Natalie Portman, and another with both actors. Stella hosted a premiere cocktail party at her West Hollywood boutique to celebrate the debut of the video, drawing Gwen Stefani, Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow and Dave Grohl – and of course McCartney himself – away from Coachella.

Introducing the clip to the crowd, McCartney said a phone call with his daughter triggered its concept. “I said, ‘I’m not sure I want to do a million-dollar video,'” the legend said, according to WWD. “She said, ‘So do something really simple. You know Natalie. Ring Natalie up and ask her if she’ll do something.’ I said, ‘That is a good idea.'”

And so it was. McCartney soon realized it was a “guy’s song,” so eventually he invited Depp to appear as well. “A week after Stella had mentioned the idea, I was back here filming it,” the singer says.

Her decision to host a party to screen her father’s new video was equally “an effortless thing,” the younger McCartney said. “We were just like, ‘You’re going to be in L.A. I’m going to be in L.A. Let’s do something.”

Stella’s fashionable tie-in to her father’s clip works well on an artistic level, too: the clip was influenced partially by legendary fashion shoots.

“The inspiration [for the clip] is Nancy [Shevell],” McCartney said, referring to his new wife. “The actual video itself is inspired by Irving Penn’s photography.”
