Costume designer and stylist Trish Summerville has been a hidden but salient force behind many of the decade’s most visually compelling pop stars. Renowned for shaping the bold style direction of tours for No Doubt, Black Eyed Peas, and Janet Jackson, she also liberated the grittier side of P!nk’s and Christina Aguilera’s aesthetics, citing “chola chic” as a core influence to her fashion approach. Summerville’s affinity for tough girls recently landed her an enviable gig as the official costume designer for David Fincher’s upcoming U.S. adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the thriller based on Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s crime novel of the same name, and Summerville is designing a capsule collection based on the movie’s fashion for Swedish mass retailer.

Like Summerville’s real-life pop heroines, Dragon Tattoo’s protagonist, hacker Lisbeth Salander, is a female with a hard-as-nails persona and ensembles to match. Her tomboy-meets-cyberpunk style reflects her uncompromising worldview: she sports a fierce black crop, spiked jewelry, leather pants, and – of course – a rad motorcycle jacket. The H&M collection, launching December 14th at 180 stores and online, will include these staples, with the token moto jacket retailing for $199 in either burgundy or black leather. Tribal-themed jewelry, hoodies and lace-up boots fill in the other gaps of Salander’s recreated wardrobe, which Anna Norling, a designer for H&M, describes as a “feminized” take on the character’s assassin chic.

With vague notions of 90s-leaning techno chic already drifting back into pop star’s wardrobes (Rihanna, we’re looking at you), it will be worth monitoring how the December 21st theatrical release of Dragon Tattoo influences the fashion and music tribes. As Rolling Stone previously reported, Fincher’s old ally Trent Reznor is scoring the film. Is a full-blown Hackers style revival just around the corner? If so, we called it first.
