PlayStation Vita Can Double as a PS3 Controller

Sony has revealed that the PlayStation Vita handheld gaming system can also be used as a PlayStation 3 controller.

Speaking to video game insiders at the Develop Conference, Sony Europe R&D manager Phil Rogers has announced that the console will be able to function similarly to Nintendo’s tablet-like Wii U controller. According to Rogers, players will be able to display video from the PS3 on the portable device, as well as control set-top games using the mobile gadget’s touch surfaces and gyroscope.

“You can [also] run software on both devices and use the network to sync the game states,” he says. “And that’s pretty good, because you then have the processing power of PS3 doing that work, Vita [doing] fancy graphics – however you want to do it. You’re not sacrificing the PS3’s CPU to be able to have a rich experience on Vita.”

As previously revealed, the device is capable of cross-platform play with the PlayStation 3 in multiplayer match-ups. Select titles will further allow you to pick up a game on one platform, put it down and resume playing on the other, so you can continue saving the galaxy while catching the subway to work.

Features should be available at the system’s launch this holiday season, allowing it to offer similar features as the Wii U prior to the latter’s launch in 2012.
