News: Madonna Launches Truth or Dare, Jay-Z’s Rocawear Ad, Debating Kanye & Kim’s Fashion Power and More

– Madonna launched her debut fragrance, Truth or Dare, at Macy’s Herald Square last night. She explained that developing the ideal scent was more difficult than some might expect, hence her delay in doing so. “For some reason the fragrances that I like tend to be really expensive,” she told reporters. “One time I created a smell and I was told the amber, it was like a million dollars to ship from India or something.” Fortunately, it all finally worked out, and you can now buy products from her fragrance line for between $39 and $68.
– The Kanye West and Kim Kardashian Affair has raised a lot of eyebrows media-wide, but fashion types are honing in specifically on how their dynamic may effect his credibility as a designer. The New York Times‘ Cathy Horyn wrote that the “bombshell may finally ignite Mr. West’s fashion career,” which has confused many, as Kardashian’s fashion credibility hovers around marginal to none, despite her family’s Sears clothing line. In the meantime, rumors the couple are developing their own reality show seem much more plausible.
– Selena Gomez has unveiled a preview of her upcoming fragrance, which seemingly takes its aesthetic cues straight from Disney. What does it offer the young female consumer? A purple gown, metallic lips and unapologetically fruity notes. Beat that, Justin Bieber.
– Jay-Z’s first-ever commercial for Rocawear recently went live, showcasing the rapper in a rags-to-riches story. The ad, dubbed “Marcy to Barclays,” strives to combat rumors that the rapper/mogul is abandoning his declining brand. Ironically, not long ago, 100 employees were let go from the brand’s New York offices. Watch the commercial below:
– Lady Gaga’s and Madonna’s occasional stylist B. Åkerlund opened up about her experiences working on the singers’ respective “Paparazzi” and Super Bowl performances. “For some reason I really loved the challenge of the Super Bowl, and it felt a bit un-human and unrealistic to accomplish. That made me even more motivated to make it the greatest show on earth!” she told FashionEtc.
