New E-Ink Nook Simple Touch Reader Coming June 10

Barnes & Noble’s new E-Ink Nook eReader, the Simple Touch Reader, will go on sale June 10 for $139, offering a 6-inch touchscreen, two months of battery life and screen enhanced for use in direct sunlight.

Featuring an anti-glare E-Ink Pearl display that resembles real paper for improved visibility and user-friendly motion controls that include an on-screen keyboard, the 7.48oz unit weighs less than a standard paperback book. Roughly 35% thinner and 15% thinner than the Nook Wi-Fi 1st Edition, the eBook reader will hold up to 1000 digital volumes too. Measuring 6.5 x 5 x 0.47 inches, it should easily fit in a backpack or briefcase, and offers WiFi high-speed wireless access to thousands of bargain-priced books, newspapers and magazines via an online store.

Nook Friends social features will additionally encompass the ability to share book recommendations via Facebook and Twitter, see what acquaintances are reading, and borrow or lend books for 14 days. The Simple Touch Reader is compatible with EPUB and PDF files, promises fast page turns and offers support for expandable microSD memory cards as well.

“We set out to design the easiest-to-use, most optimized, dedicated reading device ever created,” said William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble. “Touch makes it simple to use, and the beautifully compact design makes it the most portable eReader in its class. Add to that an unmatched battery life, the most advanced paper-like touch display on the market and wireless access to the world’s largest digital bookstore, and we believe that for readers of all ages, the all-new Nook is the best eReader on the market, and a great value at $139.”

With now selling more digital than paperback or hardback books, and digital publishing making continued inroads on smartphones and tablet PCs, a new Nook introduction is hardly surprising. From ad-subsidized Kindle eReaders to a growing range of apps that offer eBook reading capability or virtual newspaper subscriptions, even more devices and digital reading alternatives are expected shortly.
