Today, MTV unveiled a new update to its Music Meter mobile app, which is available immediately for download on Android and Apple iOS devices. Version 2.0 of the program ranks artists’ daily online buzz, aids with fan discovery, adds tour date info and sorts by musical genre. It also sheds the beta testing tag present on prior editions, which have been downloaded more than 1 million times.
A mobile companion to the MTV Music Meter website, the program monitors online activity across social networks and Internet destinations to create daily artist rankings that reveal which acts are trending. Accessible from smartphones and tablets, the application’s database can be tapped to pull up hundreds of thousands of songs, videos, photos, news and biographies.
The television channel hopes its app will act as music discovery tool and mini encyclopedia, helping introduce and acquaint listeners with both emerging acts and popular performers. Designed to monitor daily popularity, the free download offers an ephemeral peek at today’s hottest trends of the moment and is custom-built for viewing between commercial breaks. If nothing else, it provides a potentially more insightful alternative to Jersey Shore.
