For its season finale this weekend, Saturday Night Live will give viewers the chance to see what happens behind the scenes at the legendary comedy show. The program will use Color, a new iPhone app that connects to Facebook to instantly capture and broadcast videos, to shoot 30-second live clips during this week’s rehearsals and the live finale’s commercial breaks. The SNL cast, host Mick Jagger and special musical guests Arcade Fire and Foo Fighters will all participate.

“There’s something magical about live TV,” Color co-founder Bill Nguyen wrote on the company blog. “I’ve dreamed about being backstage at SNL my entire life. Verizon Wireless is granting my wish (and yours too).”

To watch the videos, viewers must download the Color app, which will send out an alert as soon as a cast member or special guest starts to broadcast a new video. Viewers must be a fan of either SNL or Verizon Wireless on Facebook.

“It’s only been one short week since Verizon Wireless brought Color to its amazing 4G LTE network and devices,” Nguyen wrote. “Now through the Color app and on Facebook, we get to see a live glimpse of how the show comes together and be there backstage live on Saturday night for the season finale.”

This live-video experiment syncs up well with recent milestones for both Saturday Night Live and Facebook. Earlier this week, SNL aired their 100th digital short, which featured Justin Bieber and the return of Justin Timberlake and Natalie Portman. Facebook is having a banner week, too: on Friday, Mark Zuckerberg will ring Nasdaq’s opening bell remotely from Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California, to launch the social network’s initial public offering. It is the biggest IPO in Silicon Valley history.
