Lady Gaga set the fashionista bar high in London last night, shelling out $133,075 for a gown by late designer and friend Alexander McQueen. It was the most that anyone has ever spent on a McQueen look, and the ivory, silk tulle gown was from his “The Girl Who Lived in the Tree” collection from autumn/winter 2008-2009. The same garment was spotted on Emma Watson at the National Movie Awards in 2008.

Gaga was not present at the event but called in her winning bid by phone from the States. After the sale, host Daphne Guinness tweeted: “THANK YOU my friend Lady Gaga. You are a real person and a great one! Your proof of friendship, your time was very touching XXXX.”

Gaga purchased the dress at a sale hosted by fashion collector Guinness at Christie’s auction house in South Kensington. Proceeds benefited the Isabella Blow Foundation, created in memory of the late fashion editor who committed suicide after a long battle of depression. Guinness put 102 pieces from her high-end designer wardrobe up for sale for the occasion, and the auction raised four times the pre-sale estimate with a total of $744,285.

Lady Gaga has worn McQueen’s outrageous designs many times in her career, and has said that she wrote “Born This Way” after his death in 2010. The hit song was released on the one-year anniversary of his death.
