Kim Kardashian’s Guide to Taking the Ultimate Beach Selfie

Master of the modern self-portrait on how to nab a perfect bikini pic

No one — and we do mean no one — has done more for the art of the selfie than Kim Kardashian. (Much less published a book of their favorite self portraits.) Long before every tourist in Time Square bought themselves a selfie stick, the curvier half of Kimye was figuring out how to best capture her good side on her cellphone camera and emphasize her most flattering features. And when she sat with our video crew during her photoshoot for our latest Rolling Stone cover story, she was kind enough to share a few tips for nailing the ultimate beach selfie.

First off: Geography does make a difference. “I’ve kind of figured out lighting in different cities and countries,” she says, “and when to be out at [the] beach and to be in a bikini. I’ve figured out my time zones in each country.” Not every beach is created equal, and what type of environment in will affect your selfie quality.

Second: Learn your magic hours. Just because one time period works in Florida doesn’t mean you’ll get the same results, say, South of the Border. “In that late afternoon, when that sun is setting — that’s the perfect time [to take a selfie] in Miami. Or really early in the morning. And I don’t know if it’s the colors, or the light reflecting off the sand. . .but when I’m in Mexico, the daylight is a little bit better.”

Lastly: Yes, Virginia, there are some time periods that qualify as do’s and don’t’s regardless of where you’re at. “Middle of the day? Awful. I remember going out and the way the light hits you, it makes you [seem] more unflattering than you really are. But anytime it’s gloomy out — gloomy is perfection if you want to look your best in a bikini.”
