Today is National Coming Out Day, a yearly event that encourages LGBT individuals to publicly celebrate their sexual identity. To commemorate the occasion in style, the Human Rights Campaign has teamed up with Ke$ha for a customized souvenir: a t-shirt featuring the lyrics of her hit “We R Who We R.” The purple and black zebra-patterned unisex tee, which also features the HRC logo and Ke$ha’s scrawled signature, goes on sale today for $35 online and select at HRC stores in Provincetown, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.; only 1,000 have been produced.
With its cheeky nod towards personal liberation, it’s a fitting and expressive anthem for National Coming Out Day’s cause. HRC president Joe Solmonese compared the song’s message and shirt’s design scheme with his organization’s beliefs. “Much like a zebra doesn’t change its stripes, we hope people of all walks of life, LGBT and straight allies, celebrate themselves and their unique contribution to the fight for equality,” he said in a statement. HRC has forged previous connections to the fashion community, with Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Nike among the labels that have designed past merchandise.
Incidentally, the social cause also provides an ideal opportunity for Ke$ha to expand her own burgeoning design endeavors. After her recent collaboration with Casio watches, the singer hinted that she’d like to invite new style partnerships, listing fake fur and organic jewelry among the fashion areas she’s likely to explore.
