Jim Carrey Rails Against California’s Strict Vaccination Law

Jim Carrey launched into an anti-vaccination rant on Twitter Tuesday after California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill requiring all public school children in the state to be vaccinated starting in 2016. In a series of tweets, the actor accused the Centers for Disease Control of being “corrupt” and painted Brown as a “corporate fascist that must be stopped.”

“California Gov says yes to poisoning more children with mercury and aluminum in manditory [sic] vaccines,” Carrey tweeted. “They say mercury in fish is dangerous but forcing all of our children to be injected with mercury in Thimerosol is no risk. Make sense?”

The strict bill also removes vaccination exemptions based on religious beliefs, The Hollywood Reporter writes. “I am not anti-vaccine. I am anti-Thimerosal, anti-mercury. They have taken some of the mercury-laden Thimerosal out of vaccines. NOT ALL,” Carrey tweeted. “The CDC can’t solve a problem they helped start. It’s too risky to admit they have been wrong about mercury/Thimerasol. They are corrupt.” Carrey ended his rant by telling parents to check out the documentary Trace Amounts.

Governor Brown’s legislation comes four months after a measles outbreak riddled the Golden State, including an outbreak at Disneyland and aboard a Bay Area Rapid Transit train outside San Francisco. Following those incidents, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel took aim at anti-vaxxers, especially Jenny McCarthy, Carrey’s ex-wife who helped popularized the movement against the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

“This would all be okay if your kids were the only ones affected, but they’re not, because unvaccinated kids put all kids in danger, especially babies who are too young to get the vaccination shot,” Kimmel says. “But of course, that’s according to ‘doctors,’ so take that with a grain of salt.”

Kimmel then showed a video featuring doctors imploring that parents vaccinate their children. “Doctors didn’t learn about the human body from their friends’ Facebook page,” Kimmel said, criticizing anti-vaxxers’ social media methods. “They went to medical school where they studied all sorts of amazing things like ‘How to magically prevent children from contracting horrible diseases just by giving them a little shot.'”

After a backlash, Carrey reiterated on his Twitter, “I am PRO-VACCINE/ANTI-NEUROTOXIN, Get that straight.”
