iPhone Photo App Gives You a Classic Computing Makeover

Want to re-create the joys of blocky, low-resolution Game Boy Camera photos? There’s an app for that.

The iPhone app 8-bit Pocket Camera mimics the grainy, gray pixilated look and feel of Nintendo’s bizarre 1998 digital photo accessory. Using it, you can snap stills or self-portraits straight out of the early home computing era, instantly transforming subjects into CGA-display-worthy retro masterpieces.

From classic quirks like black-and-white coloring to jaggy lines and low-resolution images, it worships at the altar of nostalgia. Shutterbugs do get the benefit of modern-day conveniences, including a live viewfinder, readily addable special effects, and Twitter and Facebook social media sharing, though.

Despite downgrading the iPhone’s camera, the app’s archaic styling and old-school visuals nonetheless immediately evoke fond childhood memories. And at the bargain price of $0.99, it’s worth a download to give friends and pets the “height of grade school technology” treatment, or discover how disheveled spouses truly look in four dashing low-fi shades of gray.
