Google+ Adds 16 Games, Video Gaming Service

Bored housewives and office drones alike will soon be able to play games on Google+, online search titan Google’s social network.

A total of 16 social games including Angry Birds, Bejeweled Blitz and Crime City are coming to a new dedicated gaming section on the service, including both single-player and multiplayer offerings. While rival Facebook offers thousands more selections, Google says it hopes to avoid spamming users with updates or pestering them with posts on their profiles, as do the electronic amusements provided by competitors.

“We want to make playing games online just as fun… as playing in real life,” explains Google’s senior VP of engineering Vic Gundotra in a recent blog post. “That means giving you control over when you see games, how you play them and with whom you share your experiences. Games in Google+ are there when you want them and gone when you don’t.”

Accessed via a “games” button at the top of your stream, users will be able to view updates from circles, scroll through received invites, store virtual badges and see what friends are playing from the page. But in the interest of minimizing aggravation, the company says that notices about in-game achievements, scores or requests for help from other users will only be seen if you play games as well.

“If you’re not interested in games, it’s easy to ignore them,” says Gundotra. “Your stream will remain focused on conversations with the people you care about.”

Those waiting to waste hours in front of Diamond Dash or Dragon Age Legends will be able to do so in the near future. Google says that it’s now beginning to “gradually roll out games” and plans on “making them fully available… soon.”
