‘Game of Thrones’ Video Game Gets Brooding First Trailer

‘Iron From Ice’ will be the first of a six-episode series

Game of Thrones is being adapted into the video game realm with Iron From Ice, the first installment of a six-episode series from Telltale Games. Last week, the company released a brooding first trailer, which previews the title’s focus on House Forrester – a house not yet seen in the HBO show. Though it’s sparse on the details, the clip builds an appropriate level of suspense and offers a glimpse at the high-profile voice cast reprising their TV roles, including Peter Dinklage (as Tyrion Lannister), Lena Headey (as Cersei Lannister), Natalie Dormer (as Margaery Tyrell) and Iwan Rheon (as Ramsay Snow).

The noble House of Forrester resides in the Wolfswood north of Westeros and has, according to a release, “always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North – the Starks.” The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, “an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering ironwood trees” that was built over 1,500 years ago by Cedric Forrester and his triplet sons.

The game’s story will begin near the conclusion of the third HBO season and will end just before the beginning of Season Five. Iron From Ice doesn’t have a firm release date, but the trailer concludes with an emphatic “2014,” suggesting it will hit shelves sometime in December. The game will be available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Mac, PC and iOS.

Telltale has been quiet about plot details, fearing spoilers. But in an exclusive character premiere with USA Today, the company offered a first look at Gregor Forrester, Lord of Ironrath. “Lord Gregor Forrester is lord of a strong Northern House and a bannerman of House Glover, who are in turn loyal to the great house of the north – the Starks,” Telltale said in a statement. “As a youth, he famously arm-wrestled Galbert Glover for the privilege of becoming the man’s squire; Glover later joked that he’d gladly lose the match all over again. After his father died at the Trident, Gregor ascended to the lordship, and married Elissa Branfield at the behest of Robert Baratheon.”

The story will unfold from the perspective of five characters, each a member of the House of Forrester. The six episodes will be released over several weeks, a strategy Telltale used with previous titles like The Walking Dead – and also necessary due to plot crossover from the HBO series.

“Our characters are feeling the impact of what we’ve experienced and seen in the show, it felt like six episodes, given the scope and scale, was the right thing,” Telltale’s Director of Design Ryan Kauffman told IGN.
