Fire Away: Online Shooter Team Fortress 2 Now Free to Play

Video game developer Valve has permanently made popular online shooter Team Fortress 2 free to play. Going forward, the creator of bestselling gaming series such as Half-Life and Portal will let Mac and PC owners play the entire game endlessly at no charge, courtesy of online digital distribution service Steam.

Launched in 2007, the critically-acclaimed online multiplayer action title, which pits teams of players against each other in grand-scale gunfights and capture the flag scenarios, remains a perennial favorite with hardcore gamers. Over 200 updates have been released for the game over the past four years, which boasts an average Metacritic review score of 92 and continues to draw tens of thousands of enthusiastic online players.

Newcomers wishing to learn the intricacies of the title’s nine character classes before being filled with holes will also be granted access to training and offline practice modes. Good luck getting up to speed, though. As much practice as existing rivals have up on those late to the party, we give it about ten seconds before they turn newcomers asses into pincushions.
