When Austin Butts was born at a hospital in Queens, his parents gave their son a common, Christian name. Sixteen years later, Butts is best known as Asspizza, an accidental fashion icon with a cult teenage following and a handful of celebrity fans. Last month, Rolling Stone‘s cameras followed Asspizza and a few of his friends around New York, attending a post-Christmas fan meet-up and getting to know the kid behind the shirts, shoes and hats.
“I didn’t know I’d be like a fucking designer or some shit,” Asspizza tells us. “I made a shirt and then people liked it, so I was like, ‘OK I guess I’ll make fucking clothes.'”
These clothes often feature a big-eyed alien and can’t be purchased in stores. “Selling it feels weird ’cause I don’t want to take people’s money,” he says. “So, like, I’ll give it to someone for free, and if they resell it, I know the person who buys it will really, like, want it.”
