Discovery Inn App Offers Rare Nineties Rock and Rap Photos

Noted music photographer Danny Clinch has assembled dozens of photos of iconic musicians and paired them with audio commentary, unreleased songs and a tour of his studio to create the new iPad app Discovery Inn. Splitting the difference between interactive coffee table book and high-tech historical tribute, it memorializes 10 years of record industry evolution as alt-rock, hip-hop and country began to go mainstream.

The application, designed with Bandwdth Publishing as a companion to Clinch’s 1998 book Discovery Inn, features over 100 images and spans a surprisingly eclectic spectrum of performers, including Eddie Vedder, Radiohead, Chuck D and Johnny Cash. Portrait formats run the gamut from Polaroids to unreleased contact sheets. Backed by running dialogue from Clinch himself, the program also features artist profiles, a virtual overview of the photographer’s camera collection and unreleased tracks by rockers Blind Melon and Abandon Jalopy.

Though the app is limited to shots by one photographer, fans of alternative rock and rap may appreciate its sense of perspective. As a narrated mini-documentary of sorts, its striking pictures accurately capture these genres’ Nineties evolutions. Clinch, a celebrated shutterbug whose work has appeared in publications from Rolling Stone to The New Yorker, enjoyed a front-row seat to several musical revolutions as they unfolded. For $2.99, music enthusiasts can appreciate a fly-on-the-wall peek at his adventures.
