Digital Publishers Abandon Apple In-App Purchases

Bowing to Apple’s demands that publishers route all in-app purchases through its own services, Amazon, Kobo, Barnes &Noble and The Wall St. Journal have pulled options to buy books or newspapers directly from their respective applications.

While previously purchased media will still be available through supporting software programs, to purchase new books and volumes, customers will instead have to utilize the Safari Web browser. Changes have come as a result of Apple’s new, more restrictive app store guidelines, which essentially give it a 30% cut of every purchase made through in-app buys.

Making direct sales more inconvenient, complications are intended to force more publishers and shoppers to employ Apple’s services, leaving them no choice but to boost the company’s bottom line. Such requests clearly come at the expense of competing services, which are being forced to employ less user-friendly solutions for browsing and shopping new selections.
