Björk’s peerless exploratory fashion spirit has always been a key component in her overall identity as an artist. Ever since her formative days in the 80s pop troupe the Sugarcubes, the Icelandic pagan poetess has served as an unofficial ambassador for the design avant-garde, creating a series of legacy-securing style vignettes in her wake. Through those progressive journeys, she’s collaborated with a wide and inspired range of pioneering designers, including Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, Sophia Kokosolaki, and Marjan Pejoski, the creator of the now iconic swan dress she wore to the 2001 Oscar ceremony. For new album Biophilia, the maverick artist pushes things a few steps further, customizing every level of performance — encompassing fabrications from specially built harps to engaging social media platforms, to, of course, stirring new costume concepts.
Experimental New York City-based label threeASFOUR are responsible for the look curated on the cover of “Cosmogony,” her new single. The trio, whose esoteric aesthetic principles often cull ideals from geometry, science, ritualism, and other heady concepts that synchronize harmoniously with Björk’s own ethos, spoke exclusively to Rolling Stone about what went into the singer’s astrally awesome new look.
“It’s from threeASFOUR’s alchemy collection, which was inspired by different planets and the different metals they are ruled by,” the designers explain, referring to the “gong” dress the Cosmogony’s album art. ” The dress represents them all, and was made from different shades and colors of metallics cords .”
The collaboration actually started with the belt that is also featured on the previous “Crystalline” cover, and is a hightlight from threeASFOUR’s recent Fall 2011 collection, Resonance. ” [That] collection was based on sound frequencies that are all around us. It is an instrument by it self — we called it the threeASFOUR “harp belt’. Björk was the perfect one to take it to the next level!”
The designers agree the partnership is a special — and lasting one.
“It is a natural thing for us both,” they say. “We both have a very similar taste, aesthetic, and understanding, and we both have respect for each other . She is a dear friend — she and even her daughter Isadora wear our clothes.”
