Beyonce’s Tumblr Sets Fashion World Atwitter

Perhaps following Madonna’s lead, Beyoncé finally joined Twitter and Tumblr last week, gaining 3.8 million followers in a few days and creating instant media waves. Her Tumblr is of particular interest to the fashion set, who have already hailed daughter Blue Ivy Carter (who, incidentally, had a Tumblr before her mom) as a burgeoning fashion icon-to-be. In the past week, Bey has shared dozens of private photos of herself and Jay-Z, their daughter and their favorite things. Naturally, there’s plenty of fashion on display. Think of it as a peek at a pop and fashion icon’s bedroom mood board, and the organizing and democratizing power of Tumblr suddenly renews it own glamor. This is the beauty of the modern fan/artist experience.

Beyoncé’s social media impact on the fashion blogosphere makes sense. The style set enjoys being privvy to anything behind-the-scenes – hence the wave of hyped bloggers who offer real-time and personalized coverage of major runway shows to their cult of readers. Their interest in a pop superstar’s blog both indulges their inner Peeping Tom (sans the karma-eroding dangers of browsing Perez Hilton) and allows for a vicarious sense of kinship. After all, they probably “Tumbl,” too.
Whether Beyoncé posts photos of herself in her signature “Beyhive,” on Jay-Z’s arm at a red carpet event, or on vacation – Roberto Cavalli handbag in tow – fashion blogs are taking note, with some already issuing instructions on how to simulate her best “Tumblr” looks. Excessive? Never. Though personally we’re interested to see if she drops any hints regarding the costuming and art direction for her upcoming stage shows.
