Australia’s Nervo Light Up Electric Daisy Carnival with Zany Wardrobes

The Australian DJ and production duo Nervo shone at this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival, bringing style and addictive beats to dance music fans. It was just the latest victory for the blonde twin sisters Olivia and Miriam Nervo, who have been attracting their fair share of attention lately – first as models, then as pop songwriters and producers with a Number One song under their belts (for producing David Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s 2009 Grammy-winning anthem “When Love Takes Over”).
Now, in the midst of the global EDM craze, Nervo have become a hit on the festival circuit, playing massive stages alongside artists such as Avicii and Kaskade. For their spiky and fun dance sets, they dress in a style as colorful and addictive as their sound. Miriam spoke with Rolling Stone about the duo’s style and musical highlights from this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival.
How is dressing for Electric Daisy different from other concerts? Do you get a bit more wild with your stage looks?
We always tend to have a little more fun with our wardrobe at festivals. I wore my Black Milk suspender pants this year at EDC – which, at one gig in Dubai, I was told to get changed out of before I played. That certainly didn’t happen at EDC! Mim wore her custom-made Haleh Nematzadeh eagle studded vest. It’s her new favorite. We had it made for our “You’re Gonna Love Again” video, so you’ll see it.
What kinds of clothes feel the most expressive of your musical aesthetic?
I guess you could say clothes that are a little more “stand-out,” but that you can still move in and have fun in.
What’s the most unique “raver” look you’ve seen at any of your shows, or at Electric Daisy?
There are so many. From full-length body stockings to custom-made tutus to fur boots, or sparkling and flashing lights – they’re all special in their own way. We also love the Indian feather headpieces. But the most unique are definitely the Nervo fans who come in their custom-made t-shirts, art necklaces and raver bands. We’re always so flattered to see how much effort our fans go to.
What is a beauty product you can only get in the U.S. that you love?
Mim can only buy her special hairspray in the U.S. It’s the Fat Hair 0 Calorie hair spray – she swears it has the strongest hold.
And one you can only get at home?
I’m not sure if you can get it here – but you probably can, as you can find almost everything in America – but Paw Paw Ointment for the lips and skin.
What was the highlight of the festival for you?
Playing to a crowd of people that knew our tunes. It’s always the biggest buzz!
Why do you think there’s a renewed mainstream interest in cyber fashions right now?
With today’s fast-paced lifestyle, being able to shop while at your computer is perfect. I also feel like the Internet has opened the door for many designers who couldn’t normally get their clothes stocked. Internet stores are great for people who are after fashion that is not found in your normal high street store. We are Black Milk-obsessed and shop there all the time.
What are your top 5 Electric Daisy tunes?
