Apple mobile devices rule the online wireless video viewing market, accounting for over 80% of smartphone, tablet PC and portable media player film views, according to research by video industry service provider FreeWheel.
Per the company’s Monetization Report, which tracks over 10 billion video views, Android devices were responsible for just 20% of online mobile video consumption. The rest of the market, which FreeWheel admits is relatively small in comparison to wired video viewing, ranking in the millions alone, was split almost evenly among iOS gadgets. In total, the iPhone and iPod command 30% of the industry each, with the iPad trailing with a 20% slice of the pie.
News-based content is clearly the most popular form of mobile video being watched, with FreeWheel noting that March’s highest spikes in viewership corresponded with the dates of the Japanese crisis and NCAA March Madness live game days. Curiously, Saturday is the most popular day for online video viewing, with traffic rising by 13% over Tuesday, which generates the lowest viewership numbers of the week.
