Mitch Winehouse, father of the late singer Amy Winehouse, is less than thrilled with Jean Paul Gaultier’s Couture tribute to his daughter’s eccentric style.
“We’re still grieving for her loss, and we’ve had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy’s death,” he told the Sun. “To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on. . . No one asked us for permission or offered to make a donation to the foundation.”
He also tweeted: “We do not support Jean Paul Galtier’s [sic] collection. It’s in bad taste.”
Winehouse is far from alone in his criticisms of Gaultier’s flashy show, with many fashion critics put off by the tribute’s decadent tone. Kelly Osbourne, a close friend of the late singer, also has criticized the collection, calling it “lucratively selfish.”
Hailing Winehouse an underrated style icon, Gaultier insisted to the BBC his intentions were pure. Even if he hadn’t publicly confirmed the collection was themed almost entirely around the singer’s dishabille chic, the high-waisted skirts, corsets, and louche lounge-singer ensembles said more than enough.
A look at the show’s program notes reveal that the looks were titled after Winehouse songs, with “No No No,” “Stronger Than Me” and “A Taste Of You” among the selections. As beehived, heavily made-up models stalked the runway, a barbershop quarter piped out a rendition of “Rehab.” For the funereal finale, the girls emerged in black mourning veils, completing the gesture.
