When you are Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, every year of the 2000s is a busy one. The past 12 months were an especially productive, controversial and romantic time for the pair best known as Kimye. Between run-ins with the law, racist attacks, major career moves and one big ol’ Italian wedding, the lovebirds were inseparable and unavoidable. Would we really want it any other way?
January: Kanye Pulls No Punches
Twenty-fourteen started off with some legal troubles for ‘Ye and Kim. While attending a chiropractor appointment together, the pair was confronted by an 18-year-old who threw racially and sexually charged slurs at Kim before hurling racial slurs at Kanye as well. In response, Kanye allegedly punched the teen upwards of 30 times in the waiting room. The fallout from the battery charges he’s facing plagued most of his year, but thank Yeezus for Kim’s Instagram to help remind us how much of a big softy her dude is. January was the beginning of a North West-filled year, and it all began with some cutie patootie pics of the tot with her daddy who can’t help but smile when he’s with her.
February: Love Lockdown
West’s debut LP The College Dropout dropped on February 10th, 2004, and his tenth anniversary festivities with Kardashian (who had also been just entering the public’s consciousness 10 years ago) demonstrated how far he’s come as a celeb. He lavished his lover with a thousand red roses on Valentine’s Day a few days after the celebration. Then he showed us footage of how he rented out a football stadium and the Chicago Symphony to propose to Kim on a very special Keeping Up With the Kardashians. But the couple faced another racist attack at the Vienna Ball, where Kim was accosted by a man in blackface pretending to be her fiancé.
March: Kimye Go En Vogue
Do you remember where you were when you first saw Kimye on the cover of Vogue? It was a big day for the fashion world and for the media’s most contentious couple when their April cover was unveiled and arrived with a ton of extras, like photos and video of the two with their daughter. Haters hated on the magazine for putting “classless” figures front and center. Granted, the #hashtagged subhead probably didn’t help much.
April: Kimye Keep Winning
Once their Vogue issue hit newsstands and became an instant hit, Kimye had a chance to sit back and relax for a bit. April was highlighted by a pretty excellent guest verse from ‘Ye on Future’s “I Won” where West waxes poetic on his “trophy wife” Kim. The song gave us choice lyrics like “I want to dip that ass in gold” and “All your Mama ever made was trophies, right?” and a black-and-white video of the two rappers on the beach.
May: Kimye Are United in Holy Matrimony
A year after their legendary appearance at the 2013 Met Gala, where a very pregnant Kim wore the legendary floral dress that garnered her comparisons to everything from a sofa to Mrs. Doubtfire, the pair had a pretty tame return. The month only revved up from there: the amazing Sad Kanye meme was born, and Kim’s first Mother’s Day came with a wall of white roses that she couldn’t help but pose in front of.
Of course, that all paled in comparison to the gala that was the Kardashian-West wedding extravaganza. The festivities began with a rehearsal dinner at Versailles, where Lana Del Rey put on a private show for the guests, and culminated in the #WORLDSMOSTTALKEDABOUTWEDDING. On May 24th, Kim and Kanye had a lavish ceremony in Florence with friends and family (but no Beyoncé).
June: Kimye Do Bonnaroo
A few weeks after the big wedding, Kanye celebrated his birthday, then bravely returned to Bonnaroo — the scene of one of his most infamous meltdowns in 2008. Naturally, Kim came through to support her new husband and posed with the massive crowd on the Tennessee farm. To cap off the month, Father’s Day and North’s first birthday coincided and the family celebrating by wearing matching sweaters and napping.
July: Kim Rules the World
Shortly after officially launching at the end of June, the app game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood made a plea for world domination and won. ‘Ye covered GQ magazine, offered insight on how “cool” fatherhood is and told us how he never lost his dinosaur. Together, the pair vacationed at Joe Francis’ home in Mexico.
August: Selfie Mania
August brought some mind-blowing Instagrams from Kim’s account. Kimye hung out with Justin Bieber at Riccardo Tisci’s birthday bash; Kim posted a photo of her posing as Kanye slept with the caption “Side chicks be like.” The most dope moment of the month, however, may have been North in the studio with her dad.
September: Kimye Under Attack
A chill summer (by Kimye standards) ended abruptly with another controversy, when Kanye was accused of telling a disabled concertgoer to “stand up” during his show. The Internet went nuts, but baby Nori was able to diffuse the anger as she made her Fashion Week debut in some of the cutest and most expensive outfits any baby has ever worn. The fun ended abruptly, though, when Kim was attacked at Paris Fashion Week by a crazed fan.
October: North West Steps Into the Spotlight
Kanye kept a fairly low profile, though he surfaced for one of the two national holidays the Kardashians gleefully celebrated that month: Kim’s birthday. As for Halloween, Kim and North spent some quality time together in their extraordinarily cute costumes. First, Nori dressed as Kim’s fave lil stinker, a skunk. For round two, Kim dressed as Anna Wintour and North went as Andre Leon Talley.
November: Kim Kardashian Breaks the Internet
After celebrating baby sis Kendall’s birthday with an utter lack of eyebrows, Kim proceeded to #BREAKTHEINTERNET with her Paper Magazine cover, where she appeared completely naked and channeling her inner Grace Jones. Later in the month, she looked confused as Kanye turned all the way up for friend and collaborator Theophilus London’s record release party and danced to Young Thug’s “Danny Glover.” As of November, the world was still obsessed enough with Kim Kardashian: Hollywood that creepy pictures like this exist.
December: Kimye Give Back
Before his month got truly interesting, Seth Rogen revealed that West had rapped an entire new album for him in a limo. But Kimye have mostly taken some time off from the headlines. Kanye made appearance at the Times Square World AIDS Day Concert alongside a Bruce Springsteen and Chris Martin-fronted U2 and Carrie Underwood. Meanwhile, Kim K was feeling her look and cropped out Nori from a selfie. All in a day’s work for the Kardashian-West family.
