Another year, another first Monday of May has come and gone with the annual Met Gala. 2017’s fete was a tribute to Rei Kawakubo and her daring designs for Tokyo-based line Comme Des Garçons, now on display at the Costume Institute at NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The ball attracts a dizzying array of A-listers from Hollywood, fashion and the music world – all them eager to make their mark with elegant, avant garde, X-rated or simply outrageous sartorial choices. Here are the good, the bad and WTF moments (yes, a bathroom selfie is involved) from this year’s bash.
Mon dieu! In the time following back-to-back tragedies (the deaths of her husband and brother in early 2016), the French-Canadian superstar has empowered herself and her fans by completely revamping her public image. With the help of stylist Law Roach, the singer has grown more adventurous with both her formal and street wear. For her first-ever Met Gala (!!!), Dion came to win, showing up in custom Versace for one of the night’s edgiest looks, proving that it’s never too late to pave a new path and become a fashion icon.
For those who honored and embraced the night’s theme, the final product was truly exceptional. Solange Knowles and Caroline Kennedy were among the few, brave attendees to show off CDG designs with gusto. But, as expected, Rihanna completely owned the night, wearing a creation – from the line’s Fall 2016 collection –overflowing with petals. The look (paired with strappy, sexy red sandals) could arguably only be pulled off by the “Work” singer, whose trademark swagger was never overwhelmed by the outfit.
It’s not a party until the Kardashian-Jenner sisters pose for a selfie, and this time they got a very famous crew to crowd around them for the photo – in the ladies’ room, no less. Taken by Kylie Jenner, the crowded snap included sisters Kim and Kendall, A$AP Rocky, Paris Jackson, Frank Ocean, Diddy and a surprised Brie Larson, who (per her Instagram) merely stumbled into the starry group hang on her way to use the facilities.
Menswear at fashion galas can get boring and repetitive – as do the same poses from these dudes. This was not the case for Diddy, who offered up one of the most meme-worthy poses of the night, luxuriously resting upon the stairs at the Met as his longtime girlfriend Cassie posed in the distance. Looking like the coolest person at the entire shindig, he stared ahead with calm dignity. His explanation? “I was getting tired,” he tweeted.
Didn’t get the memo? Most years, Met Gala attendees often ignore the event’s theme, instead treating the bash like a generic fashion prom. This year was no exception – but felt much more striking, given how avant garde and peerless Rei Kawakubo’s designs for Comme Des Garçons have long been. While the bash invited stars to take risks, explore unconventional silhouettes and get weird, too many just played it safe, wearing garments and designs seen throughout award season. Some of the biggest offenders and least inventive looks came from the likes of Selena Gomez, Allison Williams and Jennifer Connelly.
