It can be tempting for any artist to approach their late-night television debut with a bigger-is-better tactic: in a sea of performances, it can feel like the loud and bombastic might more easily stay afloat. But not RaeLynn, who appeared last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers to play the lead single "Love Triangle" from her debut Number One LP Wildhorse. Surrounded by screens playing clips from her music video, RaeLynn gave a simple and tender performance of the heartbreaking song about a child endlessly shuffled between two divorced parents. In her hands, subtle is no less memorable.
"I have been through a few things," RaeLynn told Rolling Stone Country about "Love Triangle," "and I really wanted to show my songwriting and the reason that I am in country music is because I want to tell stories."
RaeLynn co-wrote all but one of Wildhorse's twelve tracks, including "Love Triangle," with Nicolle Galyon and Jimmy Robbins, and they are a nuanced and sensitive collection of songs that also don't shy away from fun, like on the danceable "Your Heart." Appropriately, she's designed her first headlining tour to cater to both sides: called the Rave Tour, the run kicked off last week and will include plenty of high-energy moments along with those ballads, as well as a post-show DJ set.
The Rave Tour next hits Chicago on May 11th.
