John Oliver on RNC: 'What the F--k Just Happened?'

"You cannot say Trump isn't a visionary," said 'Last Week Tonight' host. "For a long time, he was the only one who envisioned himself as a presidential nominee"

On 'Last Week Tonight,' John Oliver attempted to "figure out what the f--k just happened" at the Republican National Convention.

Last Week Tonight returned from hiatus on Sunday – perfect timing for John Oliver to "figure out what the fuck just happened" at the Republican National Convention. The event was, as Oliver said: "the most apocalyptic ever to happen to [Cleveland] – and bear in mind, their river has repeatedly caught fire."

Donald Trump was hailed throughout the RNC for his business acumen and no-nonsense leadership. He was described by Jerry Falwell Jr. as "one of the greatest visionaries of our time." Oliver didn't argue with the latter description: "You cannot say Trump isn't a visionary ... For a long time, he was the only one who envisioned himself as a presidential nominee."

Oliver called out the convention for being a "mismanaged shitshow" – from Trump's fear-mongering acceptance speech ("He sounds like he's about to announce the first-annual Hunger Games," the comedian said) to Ted Cruz failing to endorse Trump to Melania Trump's allegedly plagiarized speech. Oliver's most salient crack was showing clips of various speakers, including former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, emphasizing "feelings" about safety and crime over facts.

The host finished his Trump/"Drumpf" segment with an unlikely flashback – to an awkward music video from The Apprentice Season One DVD. The clip samples the businessman's catchphrases into an eerie chorus: "This is a dictatorship, and I'm the dictator. There's no voting; there's no jury."

"Unless we're careful," Oliver warned, "by this time next year, that could be America's new national anthem."
