Fifteen months after a fatal six-vehicle crash left Tracy Morgan in a coma and with numerous broken bones, the comedian and actor made a triumphant return to the Emmy Awards, cracking jokes and leaving the audience in tears.
"Last year, Jimmy Kimmel said on stage 'I'll see you next year,'" Morgan said while on stage to present the night's final award for Best Drama Series to Game of Thrones. "Thanks to my doctors and my beautiful wife, I'm here standing on my own two feet."
After saying a few somber words about the accident, the former Saturday Night Live star started to crack a few jokes about it. "When I finally regained consciousness, I was just ecstatic to learn I wasn't the one who messed up," he said. Later, he remarked how he was beginning to feel like himself again, which meant that "a lot of the women gonna get pregnant at the after party." From the audience, Morgan's former 30 Rock co-stars Jane Krakowski and Tina Fey ecstatically cheered him on.
Morgan's crash was caused by a speeding Walmart truck driver who collided with the limo bus carrying the comedian. The actor's friend and longtime collaborator James McNair was killed in the crash. Morgan later sued Walmart and settled with the department store chain. "The case is settled, but the pain is always going to be there," he said in an interview with Matt Lauer this summer.
The SNL veteran will also make a return to the sketch comedy show this season. He'll host the October 17th episode and be joined by musical guest Demi Lovato.
