"Being a clown is the most important thing to me," proclaims Chip Baskets, the antihero of the upcoming cringe-comedy show Baskets. But as the first full-length trailer for Zach Galifianakis' FX series demonstrates, he has a long way to go before he reaches Bozo-level proficiency. "You look like a clooone," Chip's green-card-craving French wife says, pronouncing the word in an exaggerated Clouseau-like accent. "But you are not a clooone."
The surreal teaser follows Galifianakis' character as he studies the art of clowning in France, despite neither speaking nor understanding a word of French; performs a twee routine at a rodeo before getting gored by a bull; dealing with his passive-aggressive twin brother (also played by Galifianakis); offering career advice to his Juggalo co-worker ("We can't all be florists, or dishwashers — some of us have to be artists"); and ordering obscure sodas at a fast-food drive-in window ("Tangerine Fanta, please ... Pepsi Lime?").
Baskets is executive-produced by co-creators Galifianakis, Louis C.K. and Portlandia's Jonathan Krisel, and costars Louie Anderson, Martha Kelly, Sabina Sciubba and Ernest Adams. The comedy premieres Thursday, January 21st, on FX.
