Ed Sheeran joined James Corden for Tuesday's Late Late Show installment of "Carpool Karaoke," belting some of his biggest hits and recounting a hilarious story involving Justin Bieber, alcohol and a golf club.
Sheeran recalled that, during a random night of bar-hopping, he wound up at a golf course, where the "Sorry" singer woozily requested him to hit a golf ball out of his mouth. It didn't go well. "I was pretty hammered," Sheeran admitted. "I was like, 'Focus, focus, focus. You can't hit him; you can't hit him; you can't hit him...I cracked him across the face … He was actually really cool about it, surprisingly. He was like, 'Oh, bro!' And just carried on."
Sheeran and Corden harmonized on several tracks from the pop star's catalog, including recent singles "Castle on the Hill" (which the host called a '"proper driving song") and the "sexy" "Shape of You," complete with Corden's behind-the-wheel dance moves. The singer, who admitted he feels "naked" without his guitar, accompanied their voices with his acoustic emblazoned with a sticker for his new LP, Divide.
Their traveling set list also included "Sing" (complete with the pseudo-rap section), "Love Yourself" and a brief cover version of One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful." During a break from the music, Corden challenged his guest to the "Malteser challenge," seeing how many of the popular British chocolate candies they could fit in their mouths. Sheeran shattered his previous record and wound up with 55, while the host fizzled out at 26.
